Materials Unlike many of our competitors, we use U.S. milled cloth in our garments and our uniforms are actually made here in the U.S.. Our cotton material is a 12 ounce cotton twill and our stretch material is a soil-release polyester weave, which is more breathable than the older nylon jackets and much easier to keep clean.

Cotton or stretch? Both materials have advantages and disadvantages. Cotton protects better against bruising but the stretch material offers greater freedom of motion. The stretch material dries out much quicker than the cotton, which can be nice after a long day of fencing. It used to be true that the cotton stayed cooler than the old nylon uniforms, but with the new polyester weave material, they both rate about the same; fencing is a sweaty endeavor!

Washing: All of our uniforms are machine washable (please use non-chlorine bleach on the stretch uniforms) and can be tumble dried on medium heat. All of our jackets are good for competition use up to and including US National Championships.

Sizing: For jackets, please measure the circumference of your chest at its widest point. That measurement should equal your jacket size. For example, 42" circumference is a size 42. For women, your bust size is the key to the jacket size: 36" bust equals a size 36. If you fall between a size (i.e.- 41" or 37") round up to the nearest even number.

Note: If there is anything about you that affects how your clothes fit (i.e.- "I'm a former swimmer, so I have big shoulders", or "I drink a lot of beer, so I have a gut" or "I have a prehensile tail") let us know in the special remarks section at the end of your order.

Metallic Jackets and Vests

AFS Stainless Steel Vests and Jackets

Our metallic foil vests and sabre over-jackets are made from German-milled stainless steel cloth, the same cloth used by Uhlmann/Allstar. This stainless-steel material is the most durable conductive cloth available, period.

Care: Our AFS stainless-steel garments can be hand-washed sparingly using warm water and Ivory Snow soap or generic "sudsy ammonia". Rinse thoroughly and hang in a warm, dry place so it can dry quickly. The lame should only be washed when it is dirty enough to interfere with conductivity (once every four to six months or less) or starts trying to move around on its own.
